The CMMF funded a series of ‘Introductory Workshops’ at the Croydon Youth Theatre Organisation’ (CYTO) – a well-established and creative Youth Theatre that stages a wide range of drama, dance and musical work – including both scripted and devised work relating to the issues facing young people today.
The project began with a series of ‘Singing & Song Writing’ Workshops’ involving both existing and new members of CYTO and culminated in an informal showcase cum cabaret of solo, duet and group pieces – with this quickly followed by all those in the group being involved in cast and chorus roles in the Youth Theatre’s subsequent production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’
The second part of the project was in ‘Developing Acting Skills’ with the workshops covering ‘fast line learning’, understanding & interpreting scripts, role characterization and the use of body language in performance – all taught through a combination of individual tutoring, pair and group working and filmed practice and review/feedback
The final phase of the project was run in the October 2014 School Half Term and this enabled those young people involved in the ‘Acting Workshops’ to try out their developing skills with some initial engagement with ‘Shakespeare’
The CMMF link to CYTO is through Dave Morgan who was involved with this organisation whilst working with the Croydon Youth Service and now teaches scenery building skills as a volunteer
